Advice needed for changing carpet covered stairs to hardwood

We have carpeted stairs to our second floor with hardwoods downstairs and carpet upstairs. We would like to convert our stairs to hardwood before replacing the carpet upstairs. Is this an easy DIY project?

I would say no, you probably need a carpenter to help. Getting the risers and treads in correctly and replacing the railings is not a beginner project. If you are an accomplished DIYer, maybe.

It is a lot harder than you my think. Unless you have extensive wood working skills you should hire a pro.

I know I didn't say this already but we just remodeled our master bathroom ourselves except for the tile work and plumbing and we have put prefinished hardwoods down in a bedroom ourselves....so I wouldn't say we are beginners. Also the stairway is walled on both sides so there are no railings....where do you order risers and treads?

Laying hardwood across a flat floor is very different than treads on stairs. There are several building codes you should be aware of because if you do it wrong, it could affect yours and your guests safety as far as a fall and if you ever go to resell your home it could cost you to have them redone to bring them up to code before a sale is allowed. I suggest hiring a qualified stair builder, NOT a handyman as they most likely do not know the codes and do not have the correct knowledge to do your stairs. If you are near Atlanta I would be glad to help BUT, if not near here I may know a reputable stair company or installer in your area and would be glad to get you in touch with them. Email me if I can assist either way at sfoster@sumstairs.com

I've seen some pretty experienced carpenters mess up stairs on their first try.
