HI there, do you have a photo at all? Do you want panels that are able to close or no?

We just do curtains on a rod on the sliders. We shove them all over to the one side when we are using the doors and then when they are being "decorative" we hang them open on each side to frame the opening. However, Ikea has a really nice wide panel system (kind of like verticals but really really wide panels.) that I like. I think Lowes also has something similar. http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/categories/departments/living_room/10702/

I used to hang curtains that had a rod on both the top and the bottom so that they didn't get in the way when we opened the door and they wouldn't flop around on the door.

The type of covering depends on the type of doors. Are they sliding doors, or french doors (two doors that open in)? Since it is in a kitchen, you probably want to go with easy clean and relaxed/ fuss free. Fabric or bamboo roman shades would probably look nice and work on French doors but not sliders. You have many options for french doors but with sliding doors you are pretty much stuck with a vertical blinds made specifically for these doors, or curtains you can pull aside. For kitchens, I like fabric since you can throw them in the wash. If you are good with sewing you can make them pretty cheap, and if not - the best selection for ready made is usually at your local JCPenney.

Bi-fold Shutters look great on a patio door. If you looking to go the drapery route then I would suggest Ripplefold drapery it traverses a lot better then any other drape.

I don't like the shutters because I find they are too heavy looking and block the view.

Picture would help. If you have a slider door, how about something like this?

Ripplefold Sheers would work really well also and they come down very easy for cleaning.

thank you everyone for all your suggestions. I like the light and airy look of sheer curtains, but I need to figure out how best to hang them. I currently have the wire clothesline looking rod from Ikea, but it sags because my drapes (although lightweight) make the rod sag. I will try to get some pictures posted. btw, love the Ripplefold sheers!

Putting a rod on the top and one on the bottom created the look of the ripple fold shears.
