That is a Chanticleer Pear. It flowers white in the spring, it has a semi-glossy green leaf in the summer, and the fall color is wonderful crimson/burgundy.

Where did the vertical rocks come from? Are they columnar basalt?

Can you give me more information about them? Is there a website I can visit to get more information?

A good site that I use is the University of Illinois' Plant Data Base: http://woodyplants.nres.uiuc.edu/
In the upper left choose the genus you want to find; in this case Pyrus for Pear and then choose the variety of Pear, which would be Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer'
