remodeling with new casing over uneven facing and sheetrock

I am remodeling and having new casing (fluted, flat on the back) put in. The old/existing facing and sheet rock are notsynchronized or flat, it was covered up by the previous casing which was a cheap builders grade casing that covered the imperfection. Is there an easier way to accomodate the uneveness other than having to use a router on the bottom of the new casing?

There are few strategies for dealing with a difference between drywall and window/door jambs. One method is to set the casing against the window and mark out the exact location, then carve down the drywall to the level of the jamb. Set your trim, caulk and paint. Scarfing out the back of the trim is another option. Using a block plane, waste out the center of the back of your fluted casing. Set the trim, caulk and paint. Scribing the trim to the wall is the another option. None of these are quick and easy solutions, they are difficult and depend on the skill of the trim carpenter.
