Renovating a Kitchen and Den

Hi Everyone.
We are about to renovate our house expanding our kitchen and den area.

The 2 rooms will be totally open to eachother, on the back of our house.

My question is mostly re: the kitchen. After tons money and demo we are going to have a 13 foot 8 inch wide by 24 foot long kitchen. There will be a giant island 4 feet wide by 8 or 9 feet long facing the den. And there will be appox. 5-6 feet between the edge of the island and the back of the couch in the next room.

Soooo...I'm stuck with the 13'8" wide kitchen. It seems really skinny to me.

Is it worth it to add 1-2 feet to widen this space?
I think yes...but it will be costly as we will have to move the mudroom a bit, stealing space from it.

Any/all thoughts are welcome. Even if you think I'm crazy over 1-2 feet in a kitchen. We just don't want to make a huge financial investment if in the end we're gonna feel squished in our new space.

Thanks.

With the proper kitchen plan, your dimensions could work and not feel 'skinny'. Post your kitchen plans for further comments.

If you are really tight on space, downsize the island. You will get a majority of the functionality of the feature with a smaller island and it is much, much cheaper than expanding the room's footprint. A kitchen about 14 x 24 feet is huge to me - I would get lost in that much space. Invest in some design services before contemplating expansion because your space is already large enough for a very beautiful kitchen

Hi Linda and Scott.
Thank you for your feedback.
I forgot to include the fact that the 13'8" x 24' measurement includes a 4 x 10 banquet/bumpout. Sooo The kitchen is really 13'8" x about 18 feet for workspace and then the bumpout for the banquet.

If you still think it is a good size...great. We have an architect designing the space, but I wonder if we should hire a kitchen design group to look at the space and make recommendations.

Any thoughts? Thank you. Thank you for your advice. I really appreciate it.
