Entry way help..Gray too unwelcoming?

February 2, 2013 in Design Dilemma
We just bought this house with an entry way! We love the entry way but we are thinking to paint it a gray color, stain the railing darker(espresso) put a little table(attached) and a chair (attached) and some sort of picture......My question is a gray entry way to unwelcoming? Opinions? Better decoration ideas?

The gray will be fine.

Do gray walls but warm it up with a darker wood console instead of the mirrored one to tie in the darker stair rail. Get a big enough one to fill the wall proportionally. Add a nice colored patterned area rug, round perhaps, to warm it up.

Grey with high gloss black would be better than "espresso" but espresso will also work.

Chair looks to plain and transitional for this grand traditional entryway, IMO.
Go with something taller, like a narrow wing chair.

I don't think gray would look good with the color of your floors. How do you feel about painting the walls sage green?

On second thought gray might look very blue against the light yellow wood floor. Gray green would look good.

A simple patterned sisal might look modern and fresh. Look at home decorators collection for cheaper options.

Gray would look lovely and with the eggplant color chair still be warm. I would pick a mid range gray of warmer color. Get rug and wall art with reds to coordinate. A red oriental would look nice.

I know it was stated above to do a green gray but I really didnt love any of the green grays......I think Im still wanting Benjamin Moore Antique Pewter. Soon enough we will stain the floors a darker color...

I think you should go with what you really like. Have you bought a sample of the Antique Pewter and either put it on the wall or on a sample board (poster board) to see if you like the color in the foyer? If not, you should do that. Paint colors always look different when they're on the walls. Staining your floors a darker color will look good with the gray but it is quite a process to do. They'll have to be stripped, stained, then a clear coat will be put on. It will take days to do.

Here are some other Benjamin Moore colors that may look good too:

1488, 1489, 1503, 1607, 1606, HC-85

This pretty foyer is painted in Benjamin Moore's Cliffside Gray. It looks great with the warm colored wood floors and white trim.

Wmpj I will for sure look at some of the other colors you suggested! I bought a very small amount of the antique pewter to see the colors and liked it but I'm open to more options... And about the floors we don't have an option about fixing them they was a leek which caused a little damaged so they need resealed and of we have to do that I might as well stain it the color I want
