Is my kitchen big enough for an island?
February 3, 2013 in Design Dilemma
I'm remodeling my kitchen and thinking of getting rid oft table and adding a big island to take it's place. Is my kitchen big enough? The room is roughly 14'x15 wall to wall. How big should the island be without getting in the way of doors and drawers?

Absolutely! Draw out the dimensions of your room with the doorways, windows, cabinets and appliances as you envision them. It is easier with a program like Ikea's kitchen planner. It's free on their site. I like to see 40 inches clearance on all sides of an island. We have a double island (48" wide) with tons of storage and the cooktop inset in Birch butcher block. Have fun with it. Incorporate eating on one side.
