Need to add some colour (life) to the exterior!
February 4, 2013 in Design Dilemma
Bought this place last fall. Looking to add life to the exterior this spring/ summer which includes new roof and paint. Any suggestions on new colour scheme? The current "weathered green" exterior blends nicely with natural surroundings but we need to freshen things up a wee bit! Note: There are windows in top 3 roof peaks, the posts are actual tree trunks (can be sanded) and we have wrap around cedar decks along left side and back. Bottom half of front of house is grey stone- like the garage. All comments welcomed. Thank you!!

Oh, and there are 2 windows behind the Japanese Maple (which will get pruned) the same size as window on far left of this photo.

A split cedar shake roof and cedar garage doors would look nice.

What color roof will you likely choose though? Roof color helps drive paint color decisions.

Thanks mmilos. I agree completely on the cedar shake. We're located in a heavy snowbelt area so the natural cedar shake might not stand up to the winter beatings tho. Might have to go artificial. Yes, roof is first project so I need to sort the colour out. Hoping the fine folks on Houzz will help us narrow down the choices. ;)

Here's a roof manufacturer that makes architectural style composite shakes that really look like wood. I'm thinking of using them for my house if not too expensive when I need to replace my roof. But I think since your roof makes such a statement you want something that'll look right. Check them out:

You can get them in custom color blends.

I have a cottage inQuebec, and it has a very pitched roof We get a lot of snow in the winter, and I have a steel roof. Good for fifty years, and it's gorgeous

Hi Ham Design. Ya know, the more I look at steel roofs, the more they make sense to me. I've seen some gorgeous homes on here that make it work aesthetically as well. I'll have a couple people come by and give me quotes in the spring to give me an idea of what it will cost in comparison. Thanks for the note, you've inspired me.
