Trim or drywall to finish new beam..

We removed a load bearing wall and installed a metal beam. The first floor is open plan now.. Ceilings are 8' and beam will be sticking out around 5". We could either finish it in drywall or put trim around it.
We do not have any crown molding and all of the trim is basic shaker style. House itself is 1925 American Foursquare.
Trim or drywall over the beam? I like the trim but worried if it would look "funny" so close to the ceiling...
Thanks!

I think you could case out the beam like the opening in your kitchen/living room picture.

Thanks! Do you think it will look fine since the trim of the beam would be coming nearly to the ceiling this way?

If you are just talking about that one beam I would drywall over it without any moldings or trims.

i think because you like the trim, and the picture you showed you should go for that,Dytecture's comment is a good idea too,but i think it would be to contempory for that style

I suppose one option we have is drywall it (if it is significantly less expensive at this time) and if we decide to add crown molding later we could add the trim to the beam as well. As Carole said I do want to maintain the style of the house.

Trimming would look more period specific but drywall would work well too.
