This, I believe, is grasscrete. It is made from concrete, with recesses in the middle that that allow grass to grow through. It is a very sustainable and attractive approach to paving because the surface is permeable. As the grass matures and fills in, you see the grid pattern less and less. I very much like the grid pattern, so I am sure that you could keep the lawn mowed really short.
