Help with how to add color to background of built in cabinets in den
healthy39gvlFebruary 11, 2013
Have painted to den...mostly one neutral color...wanted an accent wall. the only one that will really work has a brick fireplace in the middle of two walls mostly covered with built in shelving. I thought it might look nice to have the back of the shelves in same color as the wall above them (the darker accent color) but don't want to paint the wood shelves so that when we move we can easily go back to original wood. Was thinking of using fabric.....what are some easy to put up AND easy to remove options??

I have used fabric with Sta-Flo starch on drywall when I lived in military housing. It was what we did instead of painting or wallpaper. It did not damage the drywall. Have never used it on solid wood, though.

Did you ever take it off? If so, I was told you just had to dampen it and it peels right off???

Oh, yes. The inspectors in military family housing were real "pa-toots". The walls had to be perfect when you left. I didn't hang but 3 pictures in 15 years (and 18 moves).

Perhaps you could purchase paneling and paint or wall paper it and just place it against the back of the shelves? It is a cheap way to customize built-ins with no damage to them and the paneling is thin & lightweight. The only problem might be cutting them to sizes you need unless you have a handy friend or a sympathetic person at a hardware store, as most of the "major" home improvement store don't cut to size anymore.
