Need help with my fireplace.
February 11, 2013 in Design Dilemma
I have a very small home with a small fireplace (37" x 51" including frame). The wall is angled (52") & my TV is approx 15" above fireplace frame. I would like to install a fairly nice, but simple, shelf between the fireplace & TV. Any suggestions? Thanks !

What are you planning on using the shelf for? I could see something simple like this Sudbury

Or you could build a mantel up and around your fireplace. Master Bedroom

Keep in mind that most fireplaces have a minimum height from the top of the fireplace to combustibles (ie. wood shelf) I would advise to contact the manufacturer and/or building dept for that measurement

You can purchase a floating shelf that could double as the mantel. Ikea and Home Depot both have them. I have also seen these made of metal.

I think you need to remove the moulding from around the fireplace. It looks like picture frame moulding and is totally incongruous. Then decide if you still want a shelf.

I'm not a fan of the molding framing the fire place either. One thought would be to remove that and tile the entire wall (even behind the TV) to the ceiling with something that reflects your tastes. Glass tile, stone-look or large porcelain in a contemporary shape such as 6" x 12" or 18" and lay them vertically. Another way to get a mantel affect would be to use stone - you'll find remnants at the stone yard to be reasonable in price. I'd wrap it around the wall to follow the pattern of your floor tile. I'd set it just below the light switch and you'll want to find another home for the small table to the left. You'll need a couple of corbels for support but it would be a very nice feature and usable for display, Good luck!
