problem painting room to room

My kitchen/smalll dining room & living room are connected you see from one to the other. I have oak cabinets that are not getting painted (tho I would love them to be) BUT the floor in the kitchen/dinning room are getting replaced as well as the living room and all wall color...I am at a loss to not only choose wall colors but flooring. I don't want to use a darker color in the kitchen/dining room because I'm afraid to "Cut off" the space making it look small. I have a tiled slate back splash in the kitchen and a yellow-ish natural stone fire place in the living room that I dont want to paint... The space is to small for tile on the floors but all wood tones I feel look funny next to the oak cabinets. And I would like carpet in the kitchen.... Suggestions?

It would help if you could post pictures.... I would suggest a neutral paint color and perhaps an accent wall in a contrasting color or colorful art work on one wall in the dining area. Taupes, tan, grey even a gold, sage or even a blue-grey can all work as a neutral base color. Considering the direction of natural light will affect the paint color.... a northern light will make cool tones cooler and a southern exposure will make warm tones warmer..... I think you are wise not to try to paint the spaces too many colors or do the "cut-off" option.
