Water-Based Poly for wood floors

bunnybaby19February 12, 2013
I had my wood floors redone with water based poly in a semi-gloss, but they look really dull (I'm wondering if they used satin finish by mistake). From what I have seen, oil based semi-gloss has a sheen to it, so I am wondering if choosing the water based option plays a part in the dullness?

Anyway, I am having the floors re-done since I am not happy. What finish do you recommend when using the water-based product...Gloss or high-gloss?

Floor finishes typically come in matte (or satin), semi-gloss and gloss. Gloss is the hardest finish so my flooring supplier suggests using two coats of gloss then topcoat of semi or satin if you don't like the sheen.

It's an ongoing battle with my partner and I - I prefer semi-gloss, he wants high gloss.

I don't know what exact finish the refinisher used but I've been using Streetshoe semi-gloss and I find it has a sufficient shine for my taste. If you are using a regular one part waterbased poly, I suggest you upgrade the finish to a two part waterbase, aka Swedish finish. They are expensive, but much more durable than the one part finishes
