Advice on color for cupboards-paint black or white or other?
February 12, 2013 in Design Dilemma
Looking for a cost effective Reno to update kitchen cupboards with the countertop and backsplash that is there? Thinking white for a refreshing look? Any suggestions on color and best way to update this kitchen?

I think you've got the perfect kitchen to do dark rich greige on the lower cabinets and white on the uppers.

It's a little difficult to see your hardware - but I think it may need to be updated as well.

Would I paint the oak trim around the window and baseboards which are in oak in white as well?

Paint the window trim the same color as the wall paint, in a semigloss finish for ease of cleaning.
Paint the baseboard the same color as the lower cabinets.

With the white appliances and painting cupboards white... Is this too much white on white?

Personally, I do think it is too much white. I do think a darker color on your lower cabinets will break things up. I think it would work beautifully with your floor too!

I also think all white appliances and all white cupboards will be too much white in the room. The floor and backsplash might look "dirty" in comparison.
I think I would paint the lower cabinets and baseboard a color a bit darker than the floor color.

After looking over your photos I wouldn't do black or white. The reason for this is white is sterile and stark, with your floor... the color that it is, and the grouping of your cabinets I think you will have too much white. It will take away from your nice countertops and tile backsplash. ( The white would stand out over the rest) Now the black would put emphasis on your stove and dishwasher you want that to happen? I would pull a lighter tone from your tile on the back splash to do your cabinets. If your floor was white then the black would work but being it isn't you would just have to many colors without a connection. Keep cabinets neutral and make your wall color more dramatic.

Don't know how old your appliances are, but I don't know that I would paint the room or cabinets around them. Eventually, when they wear out, they are going to have to be replaced. Unless you have a thing for white appliances...
