Our property has a large bank barn built in 1876. It is in rough shape needing tin roof repairs, floor is rotted out, beams in lower level had powder post beetles and some are rotted out, wood siding is drying and rotting, etc. We have no need for the barn, but do not want to remove it as it is such a significant feature of the land. What to do?? Cost is a factor and weighed against no real need is kinda winning out.
eztia My first suggestion is to hire a professional photographer who specializes in architectural photography. Get shots of all exterior and interior features, and some with the surrounding landscape.
It sounds as if the barn might come tumbling down on itself one of these days if you have a big storm. If it falls, you will have an enormous pile of rubble to deal with. I would contact someone who buys old barn wood for use in building and remodeling homes. Wood from old barns is popular right now, so you might get a good price.
In place of the barn, you might consider planting a half an acre of conifers, or an orchard of walnut trees, or some other plant that will approximate the mass and visual weight of the barn.
