Wainscoting colors

Looking at idea photos and all photos show the bottom portion white. Can you use color? If so should it be darker than top? Ideas thoughts anyone?

Yes, in fact black is a favorite of mine. I keep the trim around the windows, doors, and ceiling white, so it doesn't get too heavy.

White is ageless, and would be unobtrusive and fresh even a few years from now. But if you have a large open area then a dark color would work, but again would depend on other furniture and features in your home. Pictures would help.
