Need help deciding whether to paint the chimney breast the darkest shade or the alcoves?

Someone told me that when it comes to paint the darker shade stands out instead of setting a wall back? Or is it best to stick to one colour and keep it simple. Wall paper not an option. Help pls! Ps: Have a charcoal corner sofa arriving, so was thinking greys. Any tips welcome! Thanks! Rachael

I generally don't like two colours in one room. It's hard to tell what the colours look like and which one to choose without seeing your couch but I would paint the whole room the same colour and then paint the fireplace a shade of white to make it stand out. That needs to be the focal point not the alcoves.

Actually the size seems accurate but it just looks like a drum hanging from the ceiling....lol! I would get something more ornate (not so boxy - the shape is wrong) and not so dark.
