I think you should go pick out an area rug with your favorite colours in it. That's a good place to start. Then pick a very neutral sofa and neutral wall colour.Pick up some pillows that are the same colour as the main colour in the rug. Now you need a couple of modern looking side chairs, and some new shiney lamps. Decide if you need to paint the fireplace a contrasting colour.Add some vases to the fireplace that are a similar colour to the pillows and you have a good beginning.

Its an awkward but pretty space.

I guess throwing out the lounge suite is not an option. The tv cabinet and coffee table are very dated and worth re-investing for a low-line modern look. The all-over green walls means this room is not a distinct living area from the mezzanine.

Consider repainting the walls into a modern taupe which will lighten and open up the tightness, buy a new cabinet and coffee table, add a rug to help ground the room and lose the clutter on the cabinet and coffee table. If your budget allows time for a new fireplace.

Create distinctive color blocking of areas rather than the all-over mash of chocolate, white and green.

Lose the chairrail and the mirror over the fireplace.

Paint the fireplace a deeper tone of the wall color / or vice versa, paint walls a softer tone of fireplace (which is kind of green rather than taupe). Lose everything on the mantle - put one modern sculptural thing on it off center.

You have a cottage room - go read a bunch of Young House Love's blog / look at their first house to see how to do something more updated. Leave the cottage bones, but work with them. TV needs to move - lining furniture up on sides of narrow room makes it feel even smaller.

I think the big puffy (oversized) furniture makes the room feel smaller.

To save space and gain square footage, mount TV over the FP. Replace sofas and chairs with four great contemporary swivel chairs and a coffee table, a couple of arc lamps.

Take the cabinet with the television and put it under the stair where the loveseat is now. Long couch where tv is pulled all the way down to - chair stays across and by fireplace for now on other side pulled toward door. Lose loveseat. Eventually consider pair of smaller chairs by fireplace and short l sectional facing away from exterior door. Lower all your art. How high is your ceiling?

If you want a contemporary look you'll need all new furniture and remove the chair rail. A low, sleek tv cabinet. If you get new furniture, please get small scale, clean lines, and DO NOT get all matching pieces. Consider putting the tv on a low cabinet where the loveseat is now. Then, you can get two swivel chairs (by the fireplace) or across from the new sofa. You could actually have 3 chairs here if you lose the loveseat and move the tv. Paint the FP and remove the mirror above for a more contemporary look.
