Kitchen Before & After

Shuler ArchitectureFebruary 25, 2013
This small remodel was a make-over of a turn-of -the-century Four Square in Seattle's University District. Like many houses in Seattle's north end, this structure was extremely run down after years of abuse and deferred maintenance. Though we were initially engaged to remodel the kitchen, the scope of this project quickly morphed into a whole house remodel once we discovered that all the systems – mechanical, electrical and plumbing - and nearly every finish in the house was in an advanced state of disrepair.

Our client initially wanted a kitchen that celebrated his Italian heritage and love for cooking. Our response was our favorite Great Room plan with a Tuscan theme. The kitchen, now an integral part of the main level, has become the social hub of the house and opens directly into the Dining Room. We also added a Powder Bath on the Main Level and a Master Bath make-over upstairs.

I am amazed how this room warmed up and became an inviting space that anyone who cooks or just wants to sit and cheer on the cook became..
I understand that white kitchens can certainly be beautiful however, my favourite would certainly be a rich stained wood application..
I love how you transformed this space..Certainly has an Italian flair to me!

I love it! I'm so glad you didn't go with white cabinets. I'm so tired of seeing white kitchens everywhere!

Love the wood finish. It ties in with the countertop and the stone flooring very well.

Thanks. In case you are curious, the finish is a semi-transparent white wash with a glazed final coat.

I love the new room for so many reason, but the main upgrade is that it's no longer ALL WHITE... I hate that look!

Nancy - I don't always hate white cabinets but I detested these. 70's vintage big-box store variety. Yuck!

If I had the money to hire out I would definitely give you a call. We just bought our house a few months ago so we have to get our funds back up to do a remodel. I just absolutely love this!

Hi DIAspoton - This particular client was wired a little differently and REALLY did not want a microwave to spoil the look of the kitchen.. The compromise that we arrived at were the open shelves on either side of the range that would allow a small micro if he decided to purchase one later.

shuler, that's unfortunate about the microwave but i suppose if the client intends to own this home for a long time and isn't concerned with guests comfort and convenience, then so be it.

Shuler Architecture, I agree with your client's option to not have a microwave..I like the old world Italian charm of this kitchen. Good old fashioned cooking!

The last kitchen I put in my clients didnt want a microwave either. Nice job on this remodel. I love the look of a farm sink and it goes great with the overall look of the kitchen.

Brilliant. I agree that the kitchen looks significantly larger. I can barely believe it's within the same footprint! My favorite piece overall is the table-island...love it! Love it all really.

Thank so much. The sink is a 'Shaws Contemporary Classis Single Bowl Fireclay Apron Sink' from Rhols (http://www.rohlhome.com). The table, believe it or not, was a end of season second from Pottery Barn that we then overlaid with a butcher block counter. We got the baskets from Pottery Barn as well. The final bill for the table was somewhere in the $350-$450 range.

As for the kitchen looking larger, looks are a little deceiving. The kitchen size is the same but moving the angled peninsula out of there really opened things up.

Sir Schuler - thanks for the info about the island. Nothing I love more than beautiful, bargain design. And thanks so much for being willing to let us look behind the curtain, so to speak.
