Hello Sharon -- I see you're fairly new to houzz -- welcome to the island.

I'm responding to your second post, since the photos are better. If you want the others attached to this thread, just attach right here. Hopefully the other thread will fall away as two gets confusing to follow.

Your family room shows its years of New Hampshire living and collecting, and I can tell from your ideabook that you're looking for a fresh start that's still true to your lifestyle and the region. Am I close?

I think if you compare your space to your design goals in the photos you've collected, you'll see it's time to get ready for yard sale season; go through as ruthlessly as you can stand to and see what you can part with. While I'm hoping you find much to pass along, you also have some keepers stashed here and there -- the Flexible Flyer for instance, the large graphic tins under the stairs, and the barrel holding what looks like ribbon or thread would work in your updated yet still NH style.

Once you've cleared as much as you can, it'll be time to think about color, storage and furniture arrangement. Floorplan or diagram would be a great help. Measure out and sketch the dimensions of the room and placement of the support, etc, and this community will be able to help!

Thanks so much, I am very new to Houzz! :) Yes, my ultimate goal is to simplify, all I am truly interested in is keeping family heirlooms that can never be replaced. I have 7 more rooms of these things! :) How would I go about attaching the other pics here?

Besides the OBVIOUS de-cluttering that must happen, I just have no clue how to arrange furniture when there are so many doorways, stairs, and a giant post in the middle of the room to work around.

That trunk at the end of the couch with the metal edging is great! I think the post will have to be a dividing point between traffic/conversation areas. Here are some examples of how that can work:

Not every photo that came up addresses your situation, but if you scroll through several pages, you'll see that there is hope.
