Kitchen help: black granite counters with maple cabinets, how would you change it?

I am moving into a house with a kitchen that has black granite counter tops and maple cabinets. While really nice, I hate the color combo. I am not big at all on black granite. Eventually, I want to redo the kitchen to a French country look, white antiqued cabinets with grey and white granite but for now my husband will kill me if I even suggest removing the existing black granite. My question is, if I want to change the color combo/look without removing the cabinets or counters, do you think it is crazy to paint the cabinets? Possibly white cabinets would look good with it? Or another color? Can you just paint maple?

I would definitely paint the cabinets white! We just built and the interior decorator who helped us says she recommends Dover White by Sherwin Williams to almost all of her clients, she said to stay away from bright white at all costs.

Paint it! Prepped and primed properly, painting cabinets can be done with great results. Even hiring someone to do it is much cheaper (and greener!) than replacing them, especially if they are in good condition and the layout is acceptable. Good luck!

You can totally pull off French country with the black granite if you paint out your cabinets. What is the hardware like?

I am not sure of the hardware, we haven't moved in yet. But I can easily change the hardware. What color would you suggest painting the cabinets? My husband is very handy, he does everything, it's just a matter of convincing him to allow the painting to happen.

My husband says the hardware is a oiled bronze.

Here's one example. Go to the kitchen photos and search "french country". There are some that use wood stained cabinets. The french country style can be achieved with fabrics, lighting and accessories.

I will have to come back soon with ideas on the island. It's black granite with cherry wood, I think. Not sure why it doesn't match but will need ideas on that for sure!
