Need help with the ENTIRE first floor!!

I am going for a more traditional look to our home. We are making a lot of updates and changes but I NEED HELP! I feel like there is a whole lot of the same brown EVERYWHERE. We tried some paint samples on the wall but I'm afraid they are too dark with the darker carpet and couch? Also I am wondering what to do around the fireplace? White mantle to break up all the brown? The kitchen needs an update also. The countertops look gray but with some brown and white speckles in it. It just doesn't seem to match in my opinion with the brown floor tile. We might get new countertops. Should we paint to cabinets white? Stain them dark? I'm thinking about even changing the floors all together to a dark wood? Sorry for the novel here but this room needs a lot of help and any suggestions would be appreciated!

I suggest you star pulling together swatches and samples of colors, stains, flooring, etc and start putting them together thinking of what building elements they represent. Include window coverings.
