What can I do on a budget to improve this dining room? Know the lighting needs to go. Love shades of blue.

Are you wanting to stay so country?

No, I like new country or traditional. That's a denim sofa in the living room.

1) no bench with heart cut out
2) soft blue gray paint
3) new light above table
4) love the quilt but not in a dining room
5) darker woods are in now, but you might just be able to change chairs for a new look
6) mirrors are HOT in the dining room

For the dining room, I would replace the blinds and valance with ceiling to floor fabric panels. Buy 4 new dining room chairs, but keep the table. Paint the table or re-stain it darker. Then, put up a new lighting fixture. If you can, put up picture frame molding under the chair rail. Then repaint it a white or off-white color. Add a darker paint for above the chair rail. Good luck and have fun.....

I would raise the chair rail to the top 2/3 of the wall...I think it would make the room appear larger. Also beef up the rail like in the pic below. I think a wallpaper would set the room apart and be impact for the entry as well. A roman shade is more up to date than a standard blind and adds warmth to the room.

chandelier idea. i would paint the corner cabinet in a rich taupe color to update it. Paint the legs of the chairs black or deep, deep blue.

if you want to make it more traditional, less Family Circle country, I agree with shortped. Remove the fake plants, use only your real plants. Move the "welcome" to a back door area. Remove all the country accessories: quilt, cute house art, plaid throws, the works. Look around for more traditional artwork that you may already have. Put the quilt display case in a bedroom or family room. Add mirror and new chandelier. Consider getting new curtain panels in a blue and white toile. It is a lovely house with good bones.

Like the idea of raising the chair rail but should I raise it up on the column too or leave it off? Should the column be painted a gray blue, too, in the section on the dining room side? Feel like I need to put something behind the love seat like a small narrow sofa table or is it best to leave it bare? The space is 53" by 13".

I would love a real ficus but the corner by the window has the heat register and the other corner is on the dark side. Is there a plant that would be good for low light?
