What to put in place of kitchen desk

My husband and I are undertaking a total kitchen DIY. Before we re-finish the cabinets, we decided to remove the tiny built-in desk. Now we're not sure what to do with this space. (The desk area was just a clutter collector and too small to be very useful.) It's only 35" wide and about 27" deep. We just removed the cabinet (pictured) and we're now considering putting it on the floor instead. We do need storage space and more drawers would be nice.

One more thing I should mention is that there is a return air vent hidden in the open space behind the cabinet. Any suggestions for a more functional use of this space?

I took that size space and made it my bar. I just like having a place to put all that stuff together so it is easier to entertain.

We made our desk area into a broom closet since we didn't have one.

You could also make a small pantry.

We can't enclose it because of the return air vent. (It was hidden behind the cabinet.) I'll have to take another photo tomorrow when the lighting is better to show it without the cabinet. They are that lovely picked oak that was so popular in the 90's!

A pantry with pull out shelves to use as a garage for things like your mixer, panini, Quisinart, etc. The part with the return just needs a vented false front (lattice maybe or do a radiator screen insert). Or if you are big coffee drinkers you can do an espresso machine with additonal storage above and below. Or a prep sink.
