My parents are thinking of selling our home and of course want top dollar and short selling time. Is a home stager worth the expense? Any recommendations in Long Island?

Yes, definately worth it! If budget is an issue, at least hire a consultant to tell you what you can do yourself to stage the home. You will recoup the expense in the sales price.

You can also look for a real estate agent with that expertise. Our agent had that as a qualification.

Absolutely! I would highly recommend them staging it prior to even finding the listing agent and especially before the agent takes photos of their home!! It is a great marketing tool!! It is fast becoming the standard and they'll want to have that staging edge... :)

Staging absolutely works, and when done properly, you will get back far more than you put into it when the home sells. This may seem obvious, but staging alone will not sell a home. You need to have a feel for the market in your area and work with a realtor who can give you sound advice about pricing the home. I'm just putting that out there because I've seen very nicely staged homes that were way overpriced for the market and then sat or took a long time to sell. It wasn't the staging that was the problem it was the pricing strategy. Good Luck!

Prior to the listing pics, clean-declutter-clean-declutter clean some more.

Your Broker can hold an Open House and get feedback prior to hiring a "stager"

Question - What would cause YOU to submit a contract for purchase?

We had no problem without hiring someone...our realtor was great. I agree with redu interior design...finding a good realtor is key.

Many agents are now paying for the staging -- perhaps they're doing that in your area?

Pro on having a stager: new way to look at your home, furniture arrangements, and give it a fresh look after living in it for many years. Helped with keeping spacious look, consider having them help with moving stuff. It helps in the flurry of selling, and you can appreciate or veto some suggestions. Con: use one within your budget, with recommendations and have him/her stick to deadlines and budget. Some staging may annoy or inconvenience 1 or more family member(s), especially decision makers. Ho ho ho. Would not be comfortable with staging associated with realtor maybe b/c of undo influence. It saved spruce up money by re arrangements.
