Start with a new wall color!

Yes, wall color definitely needs to be brightened up. Even if you painted it white, and added pops of color - it would definitely make it look more fresh and open! Beautiful home though!

Some added softness would help too.... maybe a soft shag rug.... some flowly curtains. The floors are beautiful, but definitey needs some soft texture.

I would layer rugs....a large sisal rug on bottom (would look great against the tile) then put an off-white shag or oriental on top. Yes, to a color change on walls. LOVE bottom up shades. Would look great on window over book case. You can have your wall color match the shade. Stack books verically in the corner (by the wedding pic). Beautiful home!

Should you move the sectional and center it more. Assume you will be putting something on bookcase to decorate it up.
