Well, not officially slate: they are natural stone, PA flagstones set on compacted stone dust.

are these a good stone for DIY patios or would use suggest a professional installation? it's gorgeous in pattern and color!

Installed on a level base of stone dust, the flagstones need to be 1.5" thick so they are quite heavy. A very committed DIYer could install them but results will vary a lot with experience.
