What is the surface/finish used on the island?

Montauk black slate. An option for a similar look is soapstone. Soapstone comes in a variety of colors, is heat and chemical resistant.

Was the slate honed and sealed? How is the durability and is there much maintenance? Love the look.

Yes, honed and sealed. All stones have their positives and negatives. Slate is soft so you need a durable sealant and apply when required depending on use.
