Is there such a thing as too much marble?

kespindolaMarch 11, 2013
I am in the process of choosing tile my small bathroom. I love Carrara marble and chose a dark wood vanity with a Carrara countertop. I want to do marble subway tiles for the shower but am unsure on the floor. I think adding marble floors might be too much marble for my tiny bathroom. But I am in love with a marble herringbone pattern. Any thoughts or comments?

The Ritz Carlton in St Louis has beautiful all marble bathrooms in their suites. I would go with large 18"x18" sizes on the floors. Or a penny tile or mosaic . I'm not sure what you mean by herringbone marble , never saw that. Or do you mean by the way it's laid. If so I think that would be to much pattern of the same size. It would be best to use a large scale, then a medium & small scale if your going with all marble. If you want 3 marble surfaces. The counter top would be one solid slab most likely and that's fine.

NEVER - the only problem with carrara is maintenance. You must maintain your cleaning and re-sealing regime otherwise the marble is prone to staining.

Love marble, love how it patinas, it is absolutely spectacular - some photos for inspiration.

Love marble and there is a wonderful elegance to it that is timeless. I have seen the marble herringbone pattern and although I love it I think it is too busy: if you can afford to go for large slabs, I think that is the more elegant option

Thank you for all the suggestions. I too think herringbone pattern will be too busy. I'll start looking for 18x18 size. I've attached 2 photos. It's stuck in the 80's.

You could do a herringbone pattern in a larger format tile rather than the subway. If you search houzz bathrooms I can think of at least one I saw that did that. Even if you dont do herringbone, Personally I prefer a rectangular tile for the over a square just because I find that a but more updated.

Also if you love the herringbone have you considered it for your shower? We did in ours and I am in love with it.

@ Sam do you have photos of your shower? What size tiles did you use and what did you use for the floor?

Hi - this is not a great photo but its a 3x6 subway tile on the shower walls. The shower floor is a 2x2 marble hexagon mosaic. The walls and floors of the rest of the bathroom are a grey 12x24 porcelain tile you can sort of see all the way on the left laid in a brick pattern.
