7 ft ceilings and how to finish walls to add illusion of height
March 13, 2013 in Design Dilemma
We are refinishing the basement and the walls are only 7 feet. Does bead board from floor to ceiling help give the feeling of height?

Try adding some stripes on the wall as a design element.

Different techniques might help:
Horizontal stripes will widen the room, vertical stripes will lengthen it in height. Emphasise verticality.
To make the ceiling feel taller paint it two shades lighter in colour (but not white) of the tones of your wall colour.
Whatever curtain treatment you use make sure you use the full height (so take your curtain rods/track as high as you can - don't use a valance that might cut the wall horizontally.
use low back furniture to create more wall space between the ceiling and the furniture...
Hope these are helpful to you.

Using floor lamps and rectangular mirrors, long side vertical, can add to the "lengthening" effect.
