Need new Staircase Handrail & banister ideas!
March 14, 2013 in Design Dilemma
Need help for a short staircase (1/2 wall) hand rail & banister. Right now it is old school. I am looking for some very modern ideas! Steel, cable etc.

Check local codes for steel cable. There may be restrictions where you are.

Cable rail is required to be no more than 4" on center by code, just as any other opening in the handrail system. It must be strung tight enough to withstand a 275 lb. side force and have a continuous graspable handrail from bottom of stair to top. Stair design and installation is a sometime specialty field. Codes are restrictive and variances given are few. Steel fabricators will be familiar with the code, just as GC's are. To move forward on this idea, you need a plan. Have you considered hiring a local designer for a consultation to achieve your goals?
