what color countertops make a small kitchen look bigger?

I would say 'light' countertops, beige, white or cream. What is your preference? light or dark?

I am having light beeeige floor tiles, maple cabinets and was thinking dark counter tops would be a nice contrast. the appliances are stainless steel
