Exterior color choices husband and i cant agree on one
ok question.....my husband and i can't agree on the exterior color for our new home....we are using hardie shake shingles with white windows and trim. stone front border....and in the rear stone for the fireplace. i'm leaning towards a green hue, and he wants blue or beige....as he says its more warm and inviting than the green i like. fromt he picture provides he likes the boothbay blue or sandstone beige, and i like the heathered moss. what do you think? we need to choose soon to provide to our GC.
handymam If you could post a pic, it would be a lot easier for us to choose. We don't know what the stone involved looks like, and I really think that needs to be taken into consideration.
Why not go get sample sizes of the colors you both like and try them out. It may be the once you see the actual colors yone or both of youmay cross something off the wish list, lol.
elklaker I have to go with your husband and the Sandstone Beige. I love the Heathered Moss but not with white windows/trim. Is this your "forever" home? If not, you have to think about future resale.
Color can be added with doors, shutters, etc.
congratulations on your new home.
michelle9580 thanks handyman...but this is a new construction....so no pics yet :( stone we will choose based off the color of shingle. stone would be a lighter hue as well more earthy. the monterey taupe is actually nice that i look at it ASVinteriors...thanks for suggestion. elklaker...yes this is our forever home :) we will have a wood front door :) we are building a craftsman style two story home. with a lasrge front porch. thank you all for all your help :) i think i'm liking the monteray taupe more and more...it's still warm and neutral to whichever stone we choose. our neighbors home is a beige/ivory colored home. wouldn't want to be the same color.
Riddle Construction and Design The exterior paint needs to tie into the stone on the house exterior. It also depends on the style of the house... shaker houses look better in some colors than say contemporary houses. Can you post an exterior picture of the house or the plan ?
Tami Jones Interior Design The safe route is the sandstone beige and would be lovely (based on my screen color) as would the Monterey taupe. I agree with handyman that seeing the other elements would be helpful to give you more specific advice. I will add though, the green is technically a "warmer" hue than the blue... and that particular shade of blue once it gets bigger will be REALLY blue and I would not recommend it for the main color of an exterior.
I do think it's a good idea to get samples of the top contenders and paint them on a LARGE poster board with enough coats to not have any of the white come through and see what it looks like - on a sunny day, cloudy day, dusk, dawn, etc - you get the idea. This will give you a better idea of what the color is going to look like and is well worth the investment! I recommend this to all my clients.
handymam I think then that you should choose the stone color first. You can always change what you paint later but you are not going to change the stone.
Good idea Tami. Get the stone you like and use the samples as Tami suggested before anything goes on the house.
Barnhart Gallery I'd vote for a color that you see in your stone. Make sure you look at the stone from a bit of a distance too as you're deciding on paint.
lakeliving1 Radue homes has a great picture of a home with boothbay blue. You can search for them on houzz and the fall 2012 parade home has boothbay with evening blue accents.
wildfan We just built a house and used the Heathered Moss. I really love it and we've had a lot of compliments. Our neighborhood did not need another Beige house. Our windows and trim are almond, garage and front door are wood grain.
wildfan Here is a close up picture shortly after the stone was put on. I'm not sure what the stone was called. Click on the picture to see it in full view.
michelle9580 did you have white trip around your windows or cream? door is white right? thanks for sharing! it's not common to have hardie shake siding around here so i can't just drive around.... :(
wildfan The trim is more of a cream/almond color. The door is wood grain. Due to weather (we are currently in blizzard conditions) it isn't completely finished. The coloring in this picture isn't great, but it gives you a better idea. The columns and porch aren't done. Also we don't have a driveway, sidewalk or yard yet. All in due time as soon as the weather decides to cooperate.
michelle9580 trust me i know...we're in chicago and we are down pouring in 37 degree weather...foundation no no...we have to pre order everything and our gc told us to make final choices...just so hard to do so. did you choose the stone first or shake color first?
wildfan I want to say the stone was one of the last exterior things we chose, but at this point it's all a blur. By the time we got to making interior selections my mind was already spinning. It was fun, but I hope we live in this house a long time. I don't want to do this again anytime soon.
