what are the disadvantages of hardwood flooring in a kitchen? We are thinking of extending our red oak floors, which are currently in rest of main level, into the kitchen and going with a medium stain.

I love hardwood in kitchen... Only disadvantage is if the dishwasher ever overflowed . Your wood could come up.

There is a huge discussion with over 60 comments regarding hardwood floors in kitchens going on right now in Design Dilemmas. Cut to the chase and read some stuff over there. Hardwood fans are rabid...I'm one. Regarding dishwasher catastrophes...it's covered by homeowner's insurance and it is a catastrophe not matter what kind of floor goes in...tile is not a waterproof material and can hide damage for years.

Most of our clients prefer hardwood kitchen floors, as do I. If your concern is durability against dents, review the Janka wood hardness scale to get an idea of which woods are more durable. You can also apply additional coats of finish for durability when installed.

I love hardwood floors...they are easy on your feet and legs when you are standing and working and they look great. I've had them for 12 years.

Over the past 23 years many of my clients have chosen to put hardwood floors in their kitchens and they have held up beautifully. As mentioned above you can put additional coats of poly on them for added protection.
