Need help with fan/light in bathroom venting to roof
March 24, 2013 in Other
Water is coming down the pipe into the fan/light. Almost sure it is coming down the pipe and not from around the edges. What type of vent would prevent this? Roofer says the fan isn't strong enough to open a door- type.

First verify if the water is coming from a roof leak, other penetration or pipe. If it is actually rain water coming in through the duct from the roof, confirm that is there a cap on the duct (if not, install one). Typically, an exhaust fan that is vented through the roof has a "roof hood", or "roof cap" which allows air to exhaust but provides protection from wind blown rain. Broan sells an inexpensive model which is probably available at any big box store. These are usually installed on a pitched roof. Suggest a different cap for a flat roof (roofers should be able to spec and install). Another issue may be condensation from moisture in the bathroom (may need to insulate duct), this will appear after a shower or bath and may drip down the duct and into the fixture.
Finally, confirm that the fan is adequately sized for the bathroom, these are rated on the box and there are a variety of them. maybe too much info, hope it helps.
