Boring Beige or Teal Blue?
Cass Collins
March 26, 2013 in Design Dilemma
This may be the last sofa I buy for myself (who am I kidding?) so it better be good. We recently moved from a rustic, hand-made loft into a swank townhouse with an elegant parlour with 16' high ceilings and two massive crystal chandeliers. Don't ask, but tell me, should I go safe as always with a (nice) beige sofa or knock it out of the park with the teal blue velvet with double-nailhead trim?
Other furniture includes a nicely reupholstered silver Fratelli velvet chaise and a black Barcelona chair. I will also need to choose another chair and I'm considering the white leather Blakely from MGBW. Comments?

I get tired of things quickly so for myself, I would not choose the teal blue. But I really think it's a nice piece of furniture....I would choose a more neutral color for the sofa and bring the teal blue color in as an accessorizing color. Congrats on your new place..sounds lovely.

Teal is more of a neutral because of how dark it is. All your other furniture is neutral so go with That fabulous couch. You won't tire of it. Rethink white chair and choose black or silver. Add some teal cushions. And wow. You need that couch.

I vote for the teal tuxedo. I think it's a perfect addition to the other furnishings you currently have. I'm not sure on the Blakely as it's another linear shape. Unless you have curves elsewhere in the space, the room could become quite angular.

beige will get stained easily and if it's the last thing u'll buy, then go for something that it'll last longer.. teal's nice :D

TEAL TEAL TEAL. it's rich, sumptious, timeless. perfect with the silver chase. it's tough to find a color that won't work with it and teal flatters every skin tone so people feel good when around it.

OMG I LOVE that sofa color!!!! I've worked with teal and one of the most beautiful complementary colors (using the color wheel) is lime or neon green or chartreuse - my favorite.... (pillow? and not two) or some accessory. It would all look great with silver - teal, silver, chartreuse. Is this really your room? It's incredible - love the chandelier!

Cass, I usually do not offer any opinion on furniture selection but will make an exception since it is directly related to color issue and I know a few things about colors :) If this is a color you enjoy looking at, I think, you can safely have your sofa in this color.

A large room can tolerate a lot of color. In a small place you would need to worry that too much color might make the room look smaller and cluttered, so it's usually wiser to decorate small rooms using lighter and more neutral colors like beige. In a big room, however, you have a lot more freedom to use a variety of colors to add more character and life to your space. Happy decorating! :)... Raisa

Thanks, Houzzers! You are such a great resource. The sofas are both by Mitchell Gold Bob Williams. The teal (which I have chosen!) is Liam. The MGBW designer came by today to help me chose some upholstery for a chair to pull the room together and I am loving the Edie chair for its curvy lines (thanks, Manon). I will go to the showroom next week and give it the sit test. I'll keep you all posted!
Carole Westgaard- I love your chartreuse idea! It is a favorite of mine.

@Susan Mills - I will post some photos tomorrow of the whole room. It's not finished of course but the sofa is sitting across from the piano. It links the two ends of the room. One end is the dining area (we have given our dining room over to the tv, keeping the living in living room), the other is where the chaise and another yet-to-be-purchased chair will be by the front windows and one of two non-working fireplaces. Thanks for your interest!

Congrats on your sofa, Cass :)! Enjoy! If you are in the pillow stage now, perhaps, you can draw some colors from the art you are planning to have in the same area of your room or above the sofa. It will be much easier to find pillows that match your wall art than the other way around. And best of luck with the rest of your project!... Raisa

Ok, so if anyone is still listening, we had to move from Versailles as my family/landlord sold the building! Now my teal sofa and silver chaise will be living in Brooklyn. In a lovely (but not spectacular) apartment. The good news is I have a separate dining room. Yeah, that's the only good news. Will post photos after painting is finished.

Hi! I am very happy with the sofa and I love the chaise but I must say if I had known we would have to move I may have waited to upholster it in silver. The walls are now painted, in BM Revere Pewter which helps as it works well with the silver. My Barcelona chair is in the shop - two of the straps are broken - so I'm waiting to see how that will work in the room before I post photos. I really need a great rug now. Any suggestions much appreciated.
I do have some photos of the new foyer which I will post. The Chinese chest and the pendant are from our favorite shop in Narrowsburg, NY -The River Gallery.
The dining room needs a rug also, and I am working on the buffet.
