What is the material / style / color of the counter-top?

The countertop is Vermont soapstone. Vermont soapstone has a greenish cast, with white veins. Soapstone from other areas can be all grey or black. The effect of this is very much like honed absolute black, which is a good substitute because soapstone does require some maintenance.

Thanks much. If one were looking to replicate the look and aesthetic (at least directionally) of this material and color, but without the maintenance aspect of soapstone, what material might do the job in a pinch?

Honed Absolute Black Granite. Or if you can find it, a granite called Berkshire Green or Green Soapstone. It looks like slate but is really granite, and wears beautifully. However, it seems to increasingly rare, the vein may be used up.

Yes, seems tough to find. Becoming obsessed with this photo! Thanks for the answers. On the counter, what's the difference between honed and satin?

Not sure what you mean by satin. Stone comes in honed or polished, honed meaning a dull matte finish. There is also finishes like leather or flamed, that give a textured surface; I personally don’t see the point. A kitchen like this one should have honed granite, gives it an older, more country feel.
