Should we paint the ceiling on our porch?

We are getting the front porch replaced with tongue and groove decking in a dark brown color to match the dark wooden door and surrounding frame (currently difficult to see the wooden door) along with a new full-view storm door in brown, and new white deck railings. Currently the ceiling of the porch is white to match the siding. Our home sits on a hill so when coming up the driveway you can see the ceiling pretty well. My question is, should we paint the ceiling, and if so what colors would look good? Thanks for any input!

No, the ceiling should not be a focal point. The rest of the house is.

That said, white certainly makes it a focal point, doesn't it? I'm betting that you are going to outfit your porch with accessories/furniture after the floors are done, and will have some other colors to draw the eye to: should you then paint the ceiling the grey-blue of your house trim, it will appear to be more in shadow, with the added benefit of then being unappealing to spiders, as well. Your porch decor may then take the focus more easily.

I think painting the ceiling something soothing, such as a gray/blue can make elevate the whole project to another level. It's something visitors might not notice right away, but will add a sense of peacefulness to the project. This comes from experience. Painting the ceiling in loft a pale color made all the difference.

An old Southern wives' tale says to paint the porch ceiling sky blue so the bees won't build nests there. They think it's the sky. :-)

Have you heard of a "haint blue" ceiling? It's supposed to ward off evil spirits and also, mosquitos. :) Here's my parents' porch ceiling: http://sixteenfourteen.weebly.com/2/post/2012/6/on-location-from-mount-pleasant-south-carolina.html

Well, that settles it. Paint it blue and solve all of the aforementioned issues. :-D

It is, indeed, traditional to paint porch ceilings light sky blue or gray-blue, though there are many other possibilities as well.
