Curb appeal needed

Linda KissingerMarch 30, 2013
We're buying this fixer upper and need suggestions on improving curb appeal. We're thinking of tearing down the entire wooden structure so I've posted pictures from behind the structure as well. Aside from clearing out all the junk does anybody have ideas?

what purpose is it supposed to serve? it reminds me of some of the southern Cal coastal homes with privacy barriers out front... they are usually paved and decorated with container plants or low hedges. I'm a fan of arbors but can't get my head wrapped around why it's so close to the street unless its a parking area, which you could put pavers in if that is the case... and spiff it up / straighten/ repaint, etc. I might be tempted to cut some holes in it to mimic the house for intrigue. I dunno, need more info

I did a houzz search for "front yard privacy pergola" and chose "contemporary" style to come up with a few of the below.

If you post more photos or a sketch of the lot, you may get more helpful comments.

I'm guessing that this is the main parking area and there's no garage. Does the neighborhood have setback and height requirements for new fences? An old one may be grandfathered in. Do you need a fully fenced front yard?

This looks to me like it's used for parking, but it would be nice to be able to use it for recreational purposes as well. Here are a couple of designs....the first one has a solid back wall, which would provide the same privacy that a fence would. The other is more open and decorative. Neither of these designs would break the bank.

Can you recycle the pergola to extend from the house over the in your pic #2?

Not really understanding the property about I am with losthorizonlisa on saving the pergola and paving the floor. I too love pergolas and if painted with a beautiful vine can be quite a showpiece to park your cars.

Circular window --> replace with something rectangular.

I like the circular window because it adds some architectural interest but I can see where it does not tie in to anything else. Perhaps making circular cutouts in the front or back of the pergola will bring it together. Another arguement for kerping the pergola is that it creates the feel of a courtyard in the front as well as creating privacy. The front courtyard can be enhanced into a secret oasis, with lush greenery that is visually blocked from the street.
