it is just simple wainscot paneling. cover the wall with thin 1/8" MDF board (to smooth is out). Then add a 4"-6" flat piece of 1/2" thick MDF board around the perimeter of the wall, add your vertical pieces, then fill in with horizontal pieces. Fill/patch the seams, sand down (repeat a few times to make sure no seams are visable) caulk all the inside edges of the MDF strips, and paint.

Another question: how did they attach the MDF to the wall? Glue, nails, brads?

each installer is different, but as far as I know, they glue it, and nail with smaller finish nails

Check out tutorials on Board and Batten. That is what this process is called by putting wood onto the wall in a pattern.

How large are the squares that were created with the mdf? I am planning on doing the same idea with 12" squares and 3" mdf but I'm worried if the squares are too small it will make the wall look smaller??

Yes, a 12" square is quite small. I do not recall the size on these squares, but I would assume they are about 24", maybe a bit larger. The room is probably about 12' wide.

Did you add an interior profile to the panel?
