How to fix a fireplace with two types of brick?

Alison BensonApril 3, 2013
We just moved into our house. As you can tell I painted the walls orange. I have cream furniture with orange and blue accents. The previous owners had wood paneling over the fireplace (horribly ugly). We removed it and discovered brick all the way floor that isn't attached to the cream brick in front. I normally love brick, but it doesn't go with the orange. I don't want a huge eye sore in the middle of the room. Should I remove the cream brick and glaze the other brick? How do I make a cool fireplace?

If you're looking for something a little unique, I'd invite you to check out our photo gallery at www.jvtile.webs.com it may give you some ideas. Our tile can be installed right over the existing brick and we can make trim pieces to accommodate any situation. Good Luck with your project! Jim Cottage Craft Tile

Tile is a wonderful idea, if you have the budget. If not, or for an interim fix, I'd paint the entire structure a deep charcoal like SW 7645 Thunder Gray or SW 7069 Iron Ore. Use gold, silver, white or brightly colored objects against it for a stunning contrast.

I tiled over my red brick fireplace and hearth with a stone tile and it was a stunning success.

I would plaster or sheetrock and paint the brick above with an accent color, leave the lower stone and add a wood mantel, change wall paint to be less bright because you want to accent the fireplace and the area above the fireplace.
