My husband ripped out an old sink and replaced with this IKEA version. It is not wide enough, and the former sink was built into the travertine! HELP! I don't know what to do on the sides/bottom without a major re-tiling effort. Any ideas?

Pull the cabinet and countertop forward, extend the plumbing, and build some type of box/shelf behind it and tile it a complimenting color is the best I can come up with.

Remove the tiles behind the vanity and use what you need to replace the tiles on the sides. Then tile the whole back wall with a mosaic tile with both the colors of the wall tile.

If the tiles were set with thin set they are not coming off in one piece

The only thing I can think to do is take off a few random pieces here and there, purchase new, as close a match as possible, Travertine and mix them in with the old as best you can. Like mentioned above they will probably break when you try to remove them. I would think just getting 8 or so and mix them in could work. Take a broken tile with you to get a good match.

Since you indicated a desire to not re-tile, you might want to give the following a try. DIY: cut drywall to fit into gap, tape & plaster patch edges flush, prime to seal, then faux finish the plaster patch. Depending on the faux finish skills could work for you. (I know Martha has a kit at one of the box stores for doing travertine.) Otherwise its a re-tile project.
