My first condo! Need help with paint colors and well, everything!

Hi everyone,

I just bought my first condo and I'm very excited, but I don't know where to start with the design! It's a loft style apartment so I'm going for a modern, updated look but still simple and understated (with a few feminine touches too).

I'm really struggling with the paint color. I don't hate the current paint, but I don't love it. With the cabinets and floors, I feel there is too much brown/tan. I would also like to add a backsplash but don't know what would look best with a new paint color, cabinets and granite countertops.

These pictures are from the MLS listing so this isn't my furniture. I'm trying to get away from the tan look, so suggestions for sofas would be appreciated as well! I'm working with a blank slate!

congratulations on your condo! My first was like my baby and i had so much fun fixing it up. You may be surprised but painting is not always the answer, a lot of times you can add large scale artwork and accessories throught your space and really change the feel. If you are looking to stay contemporary i would choose black or white for furniture. I have no idea what colors you like, but i will post some pics of my work and maybe it will spark some inspiration.

At the moment grunge style is very much on trend. This is where the walls look as if they are faded and old and peeling. With a loft style this would work very well but if you go to all the effort and don't like it, it will be hard on the pocket to redo.

Instead I would paint the loft pale grey which will tone down the tans in your floor and cabinets. Add some cream and donkey grey (grey with brown tints) sofa (if you can put the larger sofa against the wall facing the fire, and buy two arm chairs so you can see through to the view outside instead of blocking it.

I have added a light and pale colour scheme that might work using the colours I am suggesting (Tamara Mack photo)

Great space to decorate, Elissa, and modern style will work perfectly well here! My approach to wall paint colors is this: if your place is not huge, any light shades would make the space look bigger. Of course, if you don't like tan you can certainly switch to another color. Think of a color you really enjoy and, perhaps, you can paint with a light shade of it. Best of luck!... Raisa

Holly Anderson beat me to recommending Yellow Ochre! (Her top left picture). It will make the space a bit more gold than brown, but still leave you with flexibility for decorating the rest of the room. It's a lovely little space. Congratulations!

Or you could go with a cooler color like a light gray to play up the industrial feel of that metal pipe (which I actually really like). You really could split the space in two by painting a darker dividing color on that column by the stove and maybe even on the entrance wall as well.
