Help with new construction cabinet question

If you chose flat panel cabinets, shouldn't the whole house be flat panel cabinets? Just curious. Our builder installed traditional cabinets in both bathrooms and laundry.

According to my spouse, who works for a builder doing finishing carpentry, it can go either way.

Shaker cabinets can easily function for traditional or more modern interiors: your choice of countertop edging, trim detail and furnishings will take the house in the direction you prefer.

I would say if the rooms are not open to each other, different would be fine.

Different is good.

Different is fine. While I'm not a fan of completely different finishes in every single room. Having two different types of cabinets is perfectly fine especially in this case where they have similar lines.

Typically, in new construction, the same cabinets will be used throughout the house to create uniformity. As a builder, it seems a little odd that your builder would install two completely different styles of cabinets, but it's not necessarily a bad thing! Depends on what you specified.

Significant - the same cabs for uniformity or to save costs? My experience has been builders tend to buy builders, or contractors, packs because they're cheaper.

Did he just decide this on his own? Seems like a decision you ought to have been part of.

We do all custom cabinetry - nothing pre-fab, but have found that sometimes mixing styles can make a new home look like a remodel that was pieced together at different times. I second Kimdee's question about whether or not the homeowner was asked about his/her preference.

I guess the one bad thing about having all cabinets uniform is if they are 'trendy' because when they go out of style, they ALL go out of style. Think golden oak.....

I don't think they should match necessarily, but the styles should agree.

And if you don't want the traditional ones because they don't match your style, or what you like, then have them changed now! I wouldn't want traditional mixed with contemporary, that is for sure.

Thanks everyone. Turns out our spec sheet had stain grade cabinets in the kitchen and paint grade in bathroom. My builder said they cant do the flat panel or shaker cabinet in that type of paint grade material so that's why he did different style. I do wish i knew though so we could upgrade them bc now we can't use the stain we wanted as well.
