Spacing between dining chairs and breakfast bar chairs?

In our house the kitchen opens into the dining room, with the living room right next to the dining room. It's not a large space but I really want to put a breakfast bar where the dining area and kitchen separate (right now there is just a half wall) but I am not sure I really have the space.

Without it looking super cramped, how much space should be between the dining chairs and the breakfast bar chairs?

You need enough space to pull chairs out comfortably without banging into each other. Generally you need 36". Here is a link to guidelines http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/proper-furnitur-149156

You are very tight there, You need 12" overhang for your eating space so it doesn't appear that you do have enough room as it is now. Can the table and chairs go towards the living room?

Dytecture, are you saying it looks just about right in the sense that it could work or not work? And Carolyn, yes, they could go forward a bit more without it being too tight. Thank you for your feedback - both of you!

You need to have enough space for someone to be able to pull out a chair at the table and sit comfortably, while someone else is sitting at the bar - pick your two largest family members and grab your tape measure !! There are guildines - but it's more fun to work it out this way !!! Besides we are all different sizes too !! Have fun !!
