Flooring for open concept kitchen
April 11, 2013 in Design Dilemma
We're planning for our upcoming new build and weighing between all wood floors including the kitchen in an open concept layout or to use tile (I like travertine or equivalent) for the kitchen. I worry about aesthetics for the mixed flooring but recognize that our kitchen will get very heavy use and thus we don't want to worry about the floor getting spoiled, particularly since it is a thoroughfare to the backyard patio. We do plan to have the wood flooring (either hickory or quarter-sawn oak) sanded, stained and polished on-site in medium-brown tone. Any thoughts? I'd appreciate any advice you may have!

Ironwood Builders
We've never had a problem with wood flooring in a kitchen. Dogs, kids, heavy usage...your plan for the hickory or quartered oak is best, though we've done maple too. We just refinished hardwood floors in a kitchen that was built in 1989....wasn't necessary...no damage. We laced in new floors for the rest of the house and refinished all in a medium red/brown, so a total refinish was in the bid.

Ironwood is right. Wood flooring goes great in the kitchen. We just made these quarter sawn white oak floors for a client in Boston. She put them in her kitchen. They looks great and with a proper poly finish wont have any problems.
