Dark painter doors
April 12, 2013 in Design Dilemma
I'm considering painting my interior doors a dark colour.

Dilemma 1: should I paint them a dark grey or black?

Dilemma 2: should I use a gloss or eggshell paint finish?

Open to your ideas.

I love this look if you have modern decor and only if you have fabulous trim, as it shows up more.

We have a 60's bungalow which is getting a complete makeover. The doors are currently a mix of styles as over the years various extensions have been added. I thought painting them all a dark colour might give them a bit of harmony.

great idea Sharon ! I would go for the finish that suits the people in the house , ie all adults eggshell , sticky children, easy wipe clean gloss !! a nice way to unify the doors !

I love this look. My husband won't have it though. I agree that your doors and trim have to be in very good condition for it to look good.

If the doors aren't all the same style, I think I would go with white then, the same as the trim. Painting them black will only draw attention to them, and then it will be noticeable that they aren't the same.

If you are going to paint your doors a dark color, make sure that you have plenty of natural light to lighten up hallways etc.

Dark gray or black will work after you remodel in a satin gloss might be much In a smaller home semi gloss will also work you need lots of lighting in the hall ways but the look is very modern and high end

Here's a recent discussion on same topic: http://www.houzz.com/discussions/412966/Black-Interior-Doors-with-8--Ceilings

Our before & after pics are at bottom of that thread.

Regarding colors, we tried many blacks, finally settled on SW Caviar, a black with rich brown undertones. For a greyish black, look at SW Urbane Bronze - we tested this color, it was too grey for us but might meet your needs.

We painted the doors in satin, they were professionally sprayed. Note that you'll likely need to change out your hardware - door knobs and hinges - as well.

We're really happy we made the change, good luck!

Thanks all for your feedback. Excellent point about hardwear trebinje. Changing handles etc will help create some consistency.

I went to the same sit as you and found this inspiration pic
i think black would be smashing and all hardware should be uniform including the hinges on the doors.(as mentioned above)
Semi gloss would look better as shown in the pic.
