I just recently moved into a new home. I need assistance in floor plans, color furniture and decor ideas. I plan on keeping walls, fireplace, and floor color as is. Open to any suggestions :)

I would suggest before purchasing any more pieces for your rooms, take a moment to decide where you are thinking of placing them. If you could post pictures of all four wall views of the rooms and let us know how they connect. The bar is from kitchen correct? So this must mean the far area is for dining? What is widths and depths of rooms? Other colours that are influencing the decor? Countertops, cabinets?

The more specific you are with what your working with, likes and dislikes, budget, etc. the more helpful the ideas will be. Hope that helps.

I would make sure if u are keeping wall color and floor color, to bring home fabric samples of the furniture u are considering..there are so many variations of color that u don't want to get it home and see it doesn't work...Lighting and your floors will also play in. Your bar stools are not wild and shouldn't be hard to blend into a room..I love them..they add nice texture.

Neutral sectional is great! Now you can play around with fun accent pieces and textiles to bring that color. Usually the throw pillows that come with couches aren't that fabulous so I would shop online for pillow covers to go with your color scheme. I'd say to start with a great colored rug and work your way around that. I personally am doing neutrals and blues, maybe a little coral (if my husband lets me get a way with it!). See pics!

No, the 2nd one from Pier 1, gold rug.. My hubs just called to cancel our sectional, to big and it's our fault we didn't measure it was 12 x 9 1/2... Wasn't to happy with the neutral, if we change our minds, you'll be the first to no... I had seen a chocolate leather sectional w/ nail head trim, slate sectional, and neutral, should of taken a poll... Thanks

Your paint and floors seem somewhat on the cooler side of tone..I could be wrong as I cannot see the floor up close, but seems the walls are greige-like.. a gold rug may be too warm toned. Would hate to see u end up with a problem...are you going to wait on a rug until u have the sofa?

I'm confused by your statements that you want color (for a change), but you are looking at neutral sofas. ;) Rowe used to have a beautiful yellow duct sofa that I was in love with. I eventually purchased a deep red sofa with attached chaise. Awesome piece that I used pops of turquoise with (neutral walls & hardwood floors). It was a fun, happy room!

Is the the mantle staying as is? Are window treatments in the plan? what style of rug do you like? Maybe that would be a good place to begin and draw your inspiration for the rest of the room from the rug. Congrats on your new home!

If you are set on the TV over the FP, you need to consider that when you purchase a sofa. As I understand it, your sofa will need to be as far back from the FP/TV as possible because of the height of the TV. You'll get lots of feedback about that! lol
I haven't tried this myself, but it might help you with the task: http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/Article/How-Far-Should-I-Sit.php

Susan Mills, I'm sorry, I thought we were allowed to give our opinions. My opinion was that the mantle could also just be taken of completely. And although pattiegoode did ask about the mantle, mjsilva only said the tv was going over fireplace, not over the mantle. She later stated that she did not like the mantle. Just goes to show how people interpret things differently. :)

@ mjsilvas85: whenever anyone talks about light colors being difficult to maintain, (fabric, cabinetry, rugs), I always think "I'd rather actually see the dirt so I can clean it than have it hidden and know it's there somewhere". But that is my own personal opinion. Others differ greatly on this issue. If you have kids and black pets, you may want to reconsider...or if people will be sitting on them with grimy clothing on, you might want something darker. BUT if that's the case, the upkeep is the same...it's just that spots/stains/pet hair are more noticeable.

@mjsilvas85...The best thing to do is bring home fabric sample for comparison....All colors can have undertones that can be problematic..even if they are considered "neutrals"...also best to compare to your floors, lighting etc...

Hello! I would paint the walls slightly darker, in a soft medium grey color--grey is a big hit right now! I would then add furniture that is lighter in color, like white sofas, and use mirrored or glass coffee/end tables; this will keep the room looking larger but cosy. I would then blend in soft pillows and throws in charcoal, citrine and cream colors. The accessories I would choose would be white/off white or silver colored. A hint of greenery would add interest too, such as a few small ornamental plants. Good luck!

What a wonderful room. Repaint the fireplace mantle white/place a sofa in front of the fireplace and two chairs beside the fireplace/ Ancor the seating area with a rug/ place tables beside the chairs with lamps. Behind the sofa place a sofa table console with a lamp. A must have is a coffee table. Every seating area needs light for reading and a place to put down a cup or glass. On the wall opposite the kitchen I would place a wall unit for TV and Books. If you like books they will really warm up this space. Hang drapes high to make the windows appear longer. Or replace the blinds with plantation shutters. Whatever you do with these windows you need to do the same thing with the dining area windows.Place vertical art above the mantle (warm colors that match colors in your sofa and chairs and light the painting.. Once you have some extra money crown molding would really add to this space. I also would remove the light fixtures from the fan. You never should use overhead lighting because it is just to stark and the lights in the fan take away from the fireplace. Plants on the hearth and a really nice firescreen would warm up that area. Have fun... what a great space.

Love the couches you chose. Please at this point...concentrate on finding a rug you like. It's easier to blend art/ fabrics etc to a rug instead of the other way around. You mention grey, turquoise and yellow. So start there. I'm just trying to figure out your style--any of the attacheded grab you? This could help guide us and get some samples from folks on here.

Some would suggest against the TV above the fireplace...eye level is often the rule of thumb to avoid neck problems. :) I'm keeping you in mind regarding rugs and décor! I like the blues and greens!

You should reconsider your decision to wait on the rug. It is always the item I purchase first. It determines everything.

So many rugs to consider and so many of them are great! I love the persian rugs but I think you want to be more contemporary, even though they are a classic. I love the rug you recently posted, on my screen it does not clash - it's darker so it stands out and it's contemporary and bold but not too overwhelming - nicely contrasts. Great job at moving things forward!

My living room got destroyed because the water pipe broke due to the cold weather three weeks ago. The original color was sage green and it was done in the late 1990s. I am in the process of fixing the floor and drywall back, but would like to change color scheme this time around. The area rug is not salvageable. So I am looking into changing color, new rug and new shade. Love to keep my furnitures though.

Try a cappuccino brown and teal. A brown leather couch (you can find a good one on craigslist).

Go to our website to look at rugs...even if you don't find the exact one you love, it helps to be able to see the different patterns in a room setting. Really cool feature on our site! I think something with a neutral colors and a subtle pattern would be great.

For drapes...I think something with a chunky pleat and grommets would look awesome, maybe even in white on a dark curtain rod...or a subtle pattern here too. Love the idea of a console table...or buffet piece (either with lamps!) on the long back wall...and a gallery wall above it OR a mirror and wall sconces above.

@Timeless Interiors, the 3rd inspiration pic is a Hooker buffet and I like the console but didn't purchase it at Dillards, the height was too high to set behind couch, anyway a couple of days ago I was eyeing on it on Joss & Main it's prettier in person, really thinking about purchasing it to set in dining area... Mjsilvas85 how are the couches holding up? I've been eyeing the Alton for months, are they comfortable? Cushions holding their shape?

I love the turg throw that was in the first picture showing the Alton couch. It would go nicely and tie in the colour of your stools

Mjsilvas85. Did you purchase two Alton loveseats, or, one loveseat and one sofa? I love the Alton and am trying to decide which size. My living room is long and narrow, so was thinking one loveseat and two chairs, but I like what you have done! Everything is lovely!

Be sure to include your barstools color and texture when choosing the rugs and curtains. Pine wood credenza or tables would give you a strong "natural" base to add colors too. Find your rug and curtains next! They are the next biggest things in the room.
