Any suggestions on turning this room into a sitting area?

It's very hard to see these pictures. Could you take them at night when it's dark outside and use your camera flash please!?

If you want it to be a sitting room, why is there a dining table in the room? If you want it to be both, then do you really have the space for both? How many people need to dine in this area? With a fireplace, it would be lovely to have seating for two or four in front of the fireplace. And then if a smaller table could be pushed up against the window, you might have space for dining for 4 or 5.

Me too dfosrunnalls! Carolyn it has a dining room table in it now because i do not have a dining room, but if i made this room into a sitting area i would move the table out. I would love to have some sort of seating under the windows, but not sure what?

Then why not provide us with a sketch of the area with dimensions, including fireplace, windows and doors. That way we can better help you determine how to achieve the look you want.

I would place a loveseat settee centered and opposite the fireplace. Keep a walkway space behind the settee to have access to the door. On the foreground in picture, side of the settee a backless two seater bench, placed at an L-shape to the settee. Small coffee table in front of the settee. Floor lamp on settee side near the windows.

I've chosen to angle the 78" sofa toward the fireplace so that you can also have space for two chairs with good view of the fireplace. I have two floor lamps (those circles with a cross through them) to make for easy reading, plus a 36" coffee table. There's a small bench to the left of the fireplace for extra seating.

This same furniture can be rearranged according to your needs.

I didn't see a door marked on the sketch on that side of the room.

I love the idea!! I think with the size of your room the first pic would be the best so you can move around a little. You would have to get a smaller table and maybe some straight backed chairs, they don't take up as much room either. Adorable ideas!!! The second picture with the benches have more storage space though.

I like your first pic with storage below bench if you need it. The bench will cover some of the window but you will be able to have two functions in the room. Small table and low back chairs, not too high. (a little higher than a dining table) to avoid blocking the view. Use light color furniture to keep the space airy because of all the wood. Nice idea.

Here's another possibility that allows you to have a seating area by the fireplace and also a table that will seat 6.
As you can see, the chair by the fireplace scoots over to become the 6th chair at the dining table. If you use this plan, it is very important that you not exceed the dimensions shown.

I love your banquette idea. It will give you loads of seating. You could keep the table and add some upholstered armchairs to match the fabric on the windowseat. Make sure you pick chairs that are comfortable for relaxing.
